Tertiary education means sure will be more demanding, challenging, tougher and also tricky. When I was in first semester, there were classes, study, socialization and a new living situation amongst other big changes in my life. Beginning my first semester at college can feel pretty overwhelming at first. As a result I find myself experiencing a myriad of emotions as I adjust to all of these changes in my life. But these changes make me feel both excited and overwhelmed with the newfound independence that I discover in college. And my first semester at university college was as equally thrilling and astounding. There are a few common experiences most people share when beginning their first college term. And here are a few of the things I experiences during my first semester at college.
Homesickness is one of the challenges faced by me during my first semester. When I leave home to go live in the hostel I feel a yearning for home. It may help to keep my family and friends on speed dial and if possible, get a laptop so I’ll have easy access to email. Even I was commuting to school, expect to face a bit of longing for my family and friends because my schedule will be jam packed with coursework and due dates; time will no longer be a luxury.
Next is demanding work. I should expect to work, and anticipate a lot of it. I have to prepare myself to read chapters and study additional hours on top of attending class. With all of this work, expect to receive new challenges too. The good news is after it is over I'll reap the rewards of my success.
Other than that, time management is one of the challenges faced by me during my first semester. Anticipate having to frequently do a balancing act, especially when I was taking a full load of courses this semester. It will help to keep a calendar of my assignments because I have to remember a lot of dates to timely complete my assignments. With the heavy workload which accompanies going to college, until I adjust to expectations and develop methods to manage time, it might get a bit overwhelming. Keeping a written log of what needs to be done will help ease the pressure of trying to recall everything; it will simplify my tasks.
Beginning my first semester will likely have its struggles. For the next few years life will not be as I've known it in the past. At first it may be a little difficult to balance these new responsibilities, but once I fall into the swing of things, I'll find this gets a little easier. The initial time period during the first semester is often the hardest of my college career. This time will undoubtedly be a period of adjustment, but in time I'll settle in and before I know it, I'll find myself looking forward to my second semester.
